Karl Ahlswede is a dedicated and passionate Palliative Care Physician who has spent his career offering advanced care planning and palliative care and medicine to patients throughout Pennsylvania.
For nearly two years, Karl Ahlswede has been serving as the Attending Physician at UPMC (or University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) Susquehanna, in Williamsport, caring for patients in the Northeast Pennsylvania region.
Throughout his career, Karl Ahlswede has distinguished himself as a skilled physician whose industry expertise includes areas like managed care, palliative care, patient education and safety, healthcare management, clinical research, advanced care planning, treatment healthcare consulting, informatics, medicine, and more. Karl is certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine by the American Board of Surgery and licensed by the Pennsylvania and Delaware Medical Licensing Boards. He is also a Pennsylvania Registered Pharmacist. For his outstanding work, Karl has earned the distinction of Top Doc by Castle Connolly and Philadelphia Magazine.
Prior to his current role, Karl Ahlswede spent nearly nine years working with a healthcare center as Medical Director and Palliative Care Physician. During this time, he worked with the Bryn Mawr Hospital as well, also as a Palliative Care Physician. Before he moved into those roles, however, Karl spent time honing his entrepreneurial talents through his practice, Advance Care Planning, which he owned and operated from 2010 to 2014. Through his practice, Karl met with patients and their families to establish their goals and wishes for future difficult medical decisions and situations for better preparedness.
Additionally, in his career, Karl Has worked as a Fellow Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Staff Pharmacist, Research Resident, ICU Intensivist, an Intern Pharmacy Student, and General Surgery Resident, alongside interning with the National Pharmaceutical Council.
Karl Ahlswede’s academic career began in 1979 when he enrolled at the University of Colorado at Boulder. While a student, he was a member of the track and field team, he earned the Upjohn Achievement Award, and he was named to the Dean’s List and Chancellor’s List. Karl graduated in 1984 with his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. From there, He enrolled at the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, where he graduated with his Doctorate of Medicine in 1988.
In his personal life, Karl is particularly passionate about photography, running ultramarathons, and bonsai plants.
